My son had a fever virus and now I have tonsillitis. Are they connected?

He had a fever from 6-6-11 until 6-11-11 and I developed a sore throat on the 13th. I went to the doctor and they did a strep test (negative) but said it could still be postitive so they went ahead and put me on an antibiotic. However, after six doses I am not any better.
