How is it possible that humans still buy into the possibility of a supernatural being?

How is it possible that humans still buy into the possibility of a supernatural being? Does it scare anyone that the vast majority of our representatives in the US government think God is real? It is crystal clear even to the most poorly educated person that any god is as imaginary and the tooth fairy. Why do we continue to let religion be such a blight on humanity when ALL evidence is against the idea, and religion is so damaging the human race?
