Any suggestions on how to alleviate a viral throat infection?

A couple of days ago I went through emergency room because it felt as if my throat was closing. The doctors ran tests and said I didn't have strep or mono, but a viral throat infection. He told me to use a chloraseptic spray, gargle salt warm salt water, and rest. He did not give me any antibiotics because he said antibiotics would not help. It still feels like there is pressure on the side of my neck and as if my throat is closing. Any suggestions on how I can alleviate this problem? I was told to stay on bed rest for three days, but I have to return to work on Sunday. I cannot work like this, especially since I work outside in an amusement park. I should also mention that it feels as if there is pressure in my chest, but the doctor listened to me breathe and did not say anything was out of the ordinary.
